Introduction
Thermal Electronics Corp., established in 1997, develops, designs and manufactures Thermo Electric Peltier based Appliances and components for food service, medical, and industrial applications.
We have over the last 8 years worked on developing a novel design focused for use in Thermo Electric Power Generations. The New Design (PHASE 1 completion January 09) will allow for mass produced modules completely produced on automated equipment. We believe this new design will revolutionize the mass manufacturing of Thermo Electric Modules and allow for millions of high density, high amperage modules. We have produce 100 amp modules using this new design. Our first Thermoelectric Generator Assembly Prototype just tested at 100 amp!
The design is specific to TEG Thermoelectric Power Generation using only automated equipment, but can be used in cooling as well. If successful we will also eliminate 4 steps required to produce the modules. This should allow for less resistance, increase efficiency, performance and reliability of the TEG modules. Several patents applications are being prepared to protect the IP of this new design.

 It all starts with a drawing and eventually you arrive at a final design. We are in the process of manufacturing a Table Top Gelato case for the North American Market. It will hold two formats either six 5 liter gelato pans or four 5 gelato pans. The tabletop gelato display case will be 115V, 60 Hz for easy installation and ideal for cafes and small bakeries who want to offer gelato ice cream, but don't want to take up a lot of valuable floor space or countertop space to offer gelato. At present there is not a smaller unit on the market. The TEC Kooler device unit will be approximately 22 " wide x 36" deep x 34" high. The actual base will be smaller to accommodate narrower counter tops. The base depth will be around 30 to 33" deep to accommodate shallower counter tops.

An introduction to thermoelectric coolers
 Introduction
Thermoelectric coolers (Peltier coolers) are solid-state heat pumps used in applications where temperature stabilization, temperature cycling, or cooling below ambient are required. There are many products using thermoelectric Peltier coolers, including CCD cameras (charge coupled device), laser diodes, microprocessors, blood analyzers and portable picnic coolers. This article discusses the theory behind the thermoelectric cooler, along with the thermal and electrical parameters involved.
How the Thermoelectric Peltier coolers Work . . .
Thermoelectrics are based on the Peltier Effect, discovered in 1834, by which DC current applied across two dissimilar materials causes a temperature differential. The Peltier Effect is one of the three thermoelectric effects, the other two are known as the Seebeck Effect and Thomson Effect. Whereas the last two effects act on a single conductor, the Peltier Effect is a typical junction phenomenon. The three effects are connected to each other by a simple relationship.
The typical thermoelectric module is manufactured using two thin ceramic wafers with a series of P and N doped bismuth-telluride semiconductor material sandwiched between them. The ceramic material on both sides of the thermoelectric adds rigidity and the necessary electrical insulation. The N type material has an excess of electrons, while the P type material has a deficit of electrons. One P and one N make up a couple, as shown in Figure 1. The thermoelectric couples are electrically in series and thermally in parallel. A thermoelectric module can contain one to several hundred couples.
As the electrons move from the P type material to the N type material through an electrical connector, the electrons jump to a higher energy state absorbing thermal energy (cold side). Continuing through the lattice of material, the electrons flow from the N type material to the P type material through an electrical connector, dropping to a lower energy state and releasing energy as heat to the heat sink (hot side).
Thermoelectrics can be used to heat and to cool, depending on the direction of the current. In an application requiring both heating and cooling, the design should focus on the cooling mode. Using a thermoelectric in the heating mode is very efficient because all the internal heating (Joulian heat) and the load from the cold side is pumped to the hot side. This reduces the power needed to achieve the desired heating.

Since 2001 we have been working on a new bold design for Thermo Electric Generators (TEG) which use the Seebeck Effect. This Effect basically causes electronics to move when a
hot side and cold side (Delta-T)are created across the legs of the module.
A specially designed thermo electric module is sandwiched between to conductors. As heat is absorbed into the hot side of the sandwich the thermal energy passes thru the module to the cold side, where the excess energy is carried off by either water, heat sink with fan or heat sink using natural convection. The DT or hot side less the cold side differential causes electrons to move creating electricity. Our new design is being conceived by a scientist whose experience in this field dates back to 1957. He has worked as a consultant with most of the leading thermo electric pioneers over his career and now is devoting time and energy to exploring his ideas.
The new TEG design is being conceived around the ability to completely automate the process of manufacturing the modules. It will also incorporate an optimized semiconductor material for efficiencies of between 7 to 9%. If we are successful and we will know by January 2009 our plan will be to mass manufacture the modules for installation in gas and diesel transport vehicles as a first market. The devices will be manufactured as a high current module in the range of 100 to 140 amps. These high current modules using present design technology are very expensive and difficult to design and therefore are uneconomical to produce except for military applications.
Our new designs will be the norm rather than the exception!
If your company is a leading tier 1 Auto supplier we would be very interested in licensing the technology. The design and cost to manufacture will be significantly lower than presently designed modules.
 Above is a typical design for a thermoelectric assembly with
cold sink. Heat sinks are almost always larger than their cold sink
counterparts. Extender blocks are used to separate the hot side
from the cold side!
