Solar Hot Water Heater & TEG Power Generators
 Evacuated tubes are the absorber of the solar rays. They absorb solar energy converting it into heat for use in water heating. Evacuated tubes have already been used for years in Germany, Canada, China and the UK. There are several types of evacuated tubes in use in the solar industry. Our collectors use the most common "twin-glass tube". This type of tube is chosen for its reliability, performance and low manufacturing cost.
 Each evacuated tube consists of two glass tubes made from extremely strong borosilicate glass. The outer tube is transparent allowing light rays to pass through with minimal reflection. The inner tube is coated with a special selective coating (Al-N/Al), which features excellent solar radiation absorption and minimal reflection properties. The top of the two tubes is fused together and the air contained in the space between the two layers of glass is pumped out while exposing the tube to high temperatures. This "evacuation" of the gasses forms a vacuum, which is an important factor in the performance of the evacuated tubes.

Adjacent is a heat pipe designed solar hot water heater. These solar heaters are ideal for cold weather climates. There is little water in the unit. The vertical pipes are vacuum tubes with heat pipes inside the vacuum glass tube. The pipe inside the glass tube vacuum is made of a copper tube containing purified water with additives. Coolant evaporates into a vapour when the suns heat penetrates the tube. The manifold at the top contains a food grade Glycol which circulates via a pump. The copper tube ends are exposed inside the manifold so the Glycol passing thru the manifold picking up the heat and transfers it to the hot water tank via a copper coil stored inside the water heater in the house.

 The coils located inside the hot water heater transfer a large amount of heat as the heated Glycol is pumped through the coils. These solar hot water systems are ideal for pools and hot tubes. If the systems are designed properly they can store large amounts of heat to be used at a later time.

As you can see the explanation above is demonstrated in the adjacent image. A number of systems can be set up in series depending on your hot water needs to increase the amount of hot water required. We are also using a thermoelectric
TEG generator as the heat exchanger which,
will not only transfer heat, but also produce enough power to run the pumps independent of the grid and depending on the system supplement the power requirements of the household. The solar hot water heating systems can heat your water and charge batteries at the same time. Allowing for off grid power generation!
This a a small water to water TEG (Thermoelectric generator) This unit with a delta T of approximately 100-120C can produce 12-14 VDC nominal voltage and produce about 20-25 watts of power. This is enough power to run 12 VDC pumps on both the hot and cold side of a domestic solar hot water system. We are making larger units in the 50 to 100 watt range that will provide not only enough power to operate a commercial solar hot water system, but additional power to charge batteries for back up power. The off grid designs are ideal for areas which experience constant grid power disruptions.
Adjacent is a 50 watt thermo electric generator @ 13-14V output with a Delta T of 130C. It utilizes the seebeck effect. The outside pipes are used for cold service water and the inner central pipes are for the closed loop coolant attached to the solar heater. Using focused solar a temperature on the hot side of 150C (Vegetable Oil) with a cold side of 20C was achieved. This unit would be ideal for off-grid power generation.
